Electricity
Management
The electricity grid has not reached the remote beach of Los Cardones. So, we are using three main alternative sources for our power needs:
Solar energy:
The sun's energy is converted into electricity by the photovoltaic cells of the solar panel, then stored in batteries. We use it to power small energy consuming appliances such as: energy efficient light bulbs (13W), radio, small kitchen appliances... It is not suitable for bigger appliances such as fridge, stove. We use butane and propane instead to operate these. The solar panel has been fitted at the top of the cabaña, so that it can receive as much direct sunlight as possible.
Rechargeable batteries:
We are using rechargeable NiMh batteries for all small electronics and flash lights at Los Cardones. Unlike alkaline batteries, rechargeable batteries have a life of several years, which reduces toxic waste.
Generator:
Used to power bigger appliances when needed, such as power tools.
